Download the server from ISO
Bootable ISO disks (from images in .iso format) contain the operating system distribution and are used as the OS installer on the cloud server. They can also be used for recovery work on the server.
Create a cloud server from the ISO disk
- Download ISO image.
- Create cloud server. Select the downloaded image as the source. Along with the server, a system network ISO disk will be created with a name like
virtual-cd-rom-for-Server.
Connecting the ISO disk to an existing cloud server is not recommended. If you want to create a bootable disk for later use, then create a new cloud server from the ISO image, configure the server, and install the required software. Then create an image from the server's local or network volume — it will be in .raw format.
Restore the server
Cloud server recovery may be required in several cases, such as:
- you need to recover a very important file;
- there are errors in the boot scripts or network configuration.
Typically, boot to Rescue is used to restore the server. Technically, an image specially prepared by Selectel specialists is used for this purpose, which allows access to all virtual machine settings, fixing any configuration error, restoring the file system or can be used for other needs.
Sometimes it can be useful to perform a server restore by booting from a special ISO disk and then patching the server's network volume.
Fix network drive
- Turn off cloud server.
- Disconnect network volume from the server.
- Create cloud server from the bootable ISO image.
- Connect a network volume to the new server to be fixed.
- Perform disk recovery work on the new cloud server. The network volume is now fixed.
- Shut down the new server and disconnect the patched network volume from it.
- Connect the network volume back to the previous server or create a new server with the corrected network volume.
